A nutritionist has spoken out about reducing cancer risk through diet, warning two foods pose significant dangers: alcohol and processed meats. Nichole Andrews, a registered dietitian nutritionist specializing in oncology, says her goal is to educate people on healthy eating habits that can lower the risk of developing cancer.
Nichole’s expertise lies in supporting thousands of cancer survivors through diet, and she emphasizes that while many foods have been linked to increased cancer risk, only two foods stand out: alcohol and processed meats.
She defines processed meats as pre-cooked meats like hot dogs, deli meats, sausages, and bacon, which contain added chemical preservatives such as nitrates. Nichole explains that these chemicals can become N-nitroso compounds when ingested, damaging cells in the bowel and increasing cancer risk.
In contrast to sugar, which is often falsely blamed for causing cancer, Nichole emphasizes that excess fat tissue is the true culprit behind increased cancer risk. Sugar, she says, provides energy for all cells, including healthy ones. Cutting sugar alone won’t “starve” cancer cells, but rather an excessive intake of calories can lead to weight gain and fat tissue accumulation.
Cancer Research UK supports Nichole’s advice, stating that processed meat is a proven cause of cancer and highlights the link between consuming these products and increased bowel cancer risk. The charity also emphasizes there is no evidence that cutting sugar entirely reduces the risk of developing cancer or improves survival rates.
