Why I Ditch Gaming Laptops for the Asus ROG Ally

As a lifelong PC gamer, I’ve spent countless hours playing games on my trusty gaming desktop – but nowadays, I find myself reaching for my Asus ROG Ally more often than not.

My love affair with gaming began when I was just a kid, spending hours on my dad’s work computer playing Microsoft Golf 1998 Edition. As I grew older, I built my first gaming PC and the rest is history. However, over the years, I’ve found myself using it less and less for gaming. That changed when I got my hands on the Asus ROG Ally.

The handheld revolution

PC gaming handhelds have been around for a while, but it wasn’t until Valve released their Steam Deck that interest really picked up. Since then, other manufacturers like Asus, MSI, Lenovo, and Zotac have jumped into the fray, delivering quality handheld gaming experiences that rival consoles.

I’m not dismissing console gaming – I own a Nintendo Switch and have fond memories of my PS Vita days. But the ROG Ally is a different beast altogether. With its powerful Z1 Extreme APU chip, it can deliver strong 1080p gaming performance, making it an excellent choice for those with vast game libraries.

Pricing, performance, and portability are key advantages of PC handhelds over traditional gaming laptops. The ROG Ally’s compact size makes it perfect for lounging on the couch while playing games, and its comfortable design is easier on my hands than a mouse and keyboard.

I’m done with gaming laptops, but my powerhouse desktop will continue to serve me well. The ROG Ally has changed the way I game, offering an unparalleled gaming experience that’s worth every penny of its £400 price tag (or $400).
