Astronomer Dean Regas says 2024 was a stellar year for sky watchers, but 2025 is shaping up to be just as impressive. The year got off to a strong start with April’s total solar eclipse, an event that left onlookers in awe.
Regas witnessed the eclipse at the Armstrong Air and Space Museum in Ohio, where 10,000 people gathered to witness the phenomenon. He describes it as “life-changing” and praises the rare sight of the northern lights visible as far south as Florida in May and October.
Other notable events include a brief appearance by the Tsuchinshan-ATLAS comet and stunning images captured by the James Webb telescope of the galaxy. The Europa Clipper, launched by NASA in 2024, is set to arrive at Jupiter’s moon Europa in 2030.
Looking ahead to 2025, Regas has several exciting events on his calendar, including Mars’ closest approach to Earth in January and a total lunar eclipse visible over North America on March 13. He’s also eagerly anticipating the Orionid meteor shower in October, which he hopes will be spectacular.
