A leading oncology nutrition expert, Nichole Andrews, has identified two foods that significantly increase a person’s risk of developing cancer: alcohol and processed meats.
Nichole, a registered dietitian nutritionist, emphasizes that while some foods are often associated with an increased cancer risk, there is no evidence to support claims about other foods like sugar. Instead, she highlights the dangers of consuming excessive amounts of fat tissue, which can lead to inflammation and hormonal imbalances that contribute to cancer growth.
The two culprits behind increased cancer risk, according to Nichole, are alcohol and processed meats. Processed meats include hot dogs, deli meats, sausages, bacon, and other pre-cooked meats that have undergone treatments like smoking or salting.
Nichole notes that while sugar is not directly linked to cancer growth, consuming excessive amounts of it can lead to weight gain, which in turn increases the risk of certain cancers. She advises against completely eliminating sugar from one’s diet, suggesting moderation instead.
Cancer Research UK concurs with Nichole’s guidance, confirming that processed meat is a proven cause of cancer and that following a “sugar-free” diet does not lower the risk of getting cancer or boost survival chances if diagnosed.
