3 Die in English Channel Crossing Attempt from France

At least three migrants have died while attempting to cross the English Channel from northern France to Britain, French authorities said on Sunday. The deaths occurred during an early morning rescue operation involving French emergency services and a navy helicopter.

The incident took place near Sangatte, where around 50 people were stranded in the water and on the beach. Rescuers assisted 45 individuals, including four who were taken to hospitals. Unfortunately, three people were pulled from the water but could not be revived despite medical efforts.

This tragedy follows a surge in Channel crossing attempts as 2024 comes to a close. The past few days have seen an increase in attempted crossings, marking one of the deadliest years for migrants attempting this perilous journey between France and England.

The English Channel route remains a major smuggling corridor due to its busy shipping lanes and perceived ease of access to asylum and work in the UK.
