At least three people have died attempting to cross the English Channel from France to the UK. The tragedy occurred on Sunday, when a boat carrying migrants ran into trouble near Bleriot-Plage in Sangatte, close to the French port of Calais.
According to local authorities, several people fell into the water while trying to board the overcrowded vessel. Emergency services responded with help on the beach, and some were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The French navy deployed a helicopter to assist in the rescue efforts.
The deaths bring this year’s toll from failed clandestine crossings to 76 confirmed cases. Around 1,500 migrants have attempted the crossing since Wednesday, with many more expected due to favourable winds. This marks one of the busiest periods on record for migrant crossings.
