US stock markets will remain closed on January 9th to honor former President Jimmy Carter, continuing a long-held tradition of mourning the nation’s leaders. The closure is part of a National Day of Mourning declared by President Joe Biden after Carter’s death at his home in Plains, Georgia.
The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq will close their equity and options markets next Thursday to celebrate Carter’s life and honor his legacy. The NYSE will also fly its US flag at half-staff during the mourning period.
This tradition dates back to 1865, when the NYSE closed after President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Since then, the exchange has observed National Days of Mourning for deceased presidents, including Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan.
The closure is a rare event, but it demonstrates respect for Carter’s impact on humanitarian causes and his commitment to public service. The NYSE and Nasdaq have also suspended trading in the past for notable figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. and the victims of the 9/11 attacks.
