Rock star Neil Young has announced he won’t perform at this year’s Glastonbury festival due to concerns over corporate control. The 79-year-old Canadian cited a desire to maintain the event’s independence as his reason for backing out.
In a statement on his website, Young expressed disappointment that the BBC, which partnered with Glastonbury in 1997, had become too influential in shaping the festival’s content. This led him to decide against playing at Worthy Farm in June.
Young’s band, Chrome Hearts, was initially excited about performing at Glastonbury but were deterred by the BBC’s demands. The veteran musician believes the festival has lost its original charm due to corporate influence.
The decision comes as a surprise given Young’s previous headlining performance at Glastonbury in 2009, which was a highlight of his career. Fans are set to miss him at this year’s event, but will be able to catch him on other tour dates.
