UConn men’s basketball kicked off the new year with a convincing 81-68 win over DePaul in Chicago. The Huskies, led by Alex Karaban’s 18 points and Solo Ball’s career-high 22 points, took down the Blue Demons despite struggling after losing star freshman Liam McNeeley to an ankle injury.
In the first half, UConn showed no rust, holding DePaul to just 7-26 shooting. The Huskies’ offense continued to fire on all cylinders, with Ball scoring 12 points on four threes in a crucial stretch. However, after McNeeley’s injury and foul trouble for Hassan Diarra, the game became more competitive.
DePaul capitalized on two UConn turnovers to take an eight-minute lead, but the Huskies responded with three consecutive three-pointers to build a 16-point advantage. The Blue Demons attempted only 12 threes, converting just three of them, as UConn’s defensive game plan kept them in check.
The Huskies’ victory marks their third Big East win, and they will look to continue their winning streak against Providence on Sunday, Jan. 5.
