A Gaza police chief and his deputy were among 11 Palestinian civilians killed in a bombing attack by Israel on a tent camp for displaced families in southern al-Mawasi. The incident was condemned by the Hamas interior ministry, which accused Israel of “assassination” and claimed the police force provided humanitarian services to Palestinians.
Israel’s military said it targeted Shahwan, who allegedly helped plan attacks on Israeli forces, without mentioning the chief. The military stated that the police force conducted violent interrogations, violating human rights.
In a related incident, six more people were killed in an Israeli air strike at the Gaza interior ministry’s headquarters. The territory has seen increased lawlessness since Israel targeted police officers last year.
At least three brothers, aged seven, 11 and 13, were among nine other victims killed by shrapnel while sleeping in their family’s tent. Social media videos showed their blood-stained mattresses inside a damaged tent.
The Israeli Defense Forces have declared the area of al-Mawasi a “humanitarian zone” but has repeatedly attacked it, accusing Hamas operatives of hiding among civilians. More than 1,500 tents across Gaza have been flooded by rainwater and sewage since Tuesday, worsening conditions in makeshift camps for displaced families.
