A 37-year-old active-duty US special forces soldier, Matthew Alan Livelsberger, died after a Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas on New Year’s Day. Authorities confirmed that Livelsberger shot himself dead before the blast.
Livelsberger rented the Cybertruck over 800 miles away and drove it to Nevada just hours before the explosion. The vehicle, which was filled with fuel canisters and fireworks, detonated near a glass entrance, sending shrapnel upward rather than outward. Seven people were injured in the incident but thankfully escaped minor injuries.
According to investigators, Livelsberger had extensive military experience as a decorated Special Forces Intelligence Sergeant. He was on approved leave when the incident occurred while stationed in Germany.
The motive behind the incident remains unknown, with authorities stating they have found no definitive link between this case and another New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans that left 14 dead. However, officials did note similarities between the two suspects who both served at Fort Bragg in North Carolina and were involved in rental services for vehicles.
The Las Vegas Police Department has stated there is no further threat from Livelsberger or those associated with him.
