Two deadly incidents involving vehicles rented on Turo, a peer-to-peer car-sharing platform, have raised concerns about safety and security. On New Year’s Day, an attack in New Orleans’ French Quarter left 14 people dead, while an explosion in Las Vegas killed one person. The Cybertruck involved in the Las Vegas incident was rented through Turo.
Turo says it is “shocked” by the misuse of its platform and has cooperated with law enforcement. However, the FBI has found no definitive link between the two incidents. The company operates a network of hosts across several countries and claims to have screened its renters thoroughly.
Despite this, concerns about security remain. Turo collected data from over 90 million booked days last year, but only 0.1% resulted in serious incidents such as theft or accidents. It’s unclear how these individuals were able to pass the company’s trust and safety checks. The incident highlights the need for stricter regulations on peer-to-peer car-sharing platforms like Turo.
