Ukraine has pledged to send hundreds of tonnes of grain to Syria as part of its “Grain from Ukraine” humanitarian programme. The move comes amid efforts to stabilize the situation in Syria following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the programme aims to offer support and collaborate with the new Syrian government, while also bolstering Ukraine’s pursuit of peace. Since its launch in 2022, the initiative has delivered over 221,000 tonnes of agricultural products to countries across Africa and Asia.
The grain shipment is part of a broader effort by Ukraine to restore diplomatic relations with Syria and cooperate with international organizations. Zelenskyy stated that the goal is to provide strong support from European partners and the US, while promoting stability in the Middle East.
This initiative comes after years of Russian interference in Syria, which has led to increased tensions between Moscow and Kyiv. Ukraine seeks to re-establish trade relations with Lebanon, aiming to double its exports this year.
The “Grain from Ukraine” programme is a key part of Ukraine’s efforts to build bridges with the international community and promote stability in the region. With Russia remaining a strong ally of the al-Assad regime, Ukraine is taking steps to establish new relationships with Syria and other countries in the Middle East.
