David Fincher Reveals Why He Turned Down Harry Potter Franchise

Film director David Fincher revealed that he was considered to direct the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise before he pitched his own take on the material. However, he declined the offer as he wanted to create a darker and creepier version of the series, unlike the traditional Hollywood adaptation.

Fincher stated in an interview with Variety that he was asked for his vision on the film and expressed his desire to make something like ‘Withnail and I’, a British dark comedy. He described the preferred direction by Warner Bros. as “Thom Browne schooldays by way of Oliver”, indicating a more traditional and light-hearted approach.

Fincher is currently working on several projects, including an American adaptation of Netflix’s ‘Squid Game’ and a miniseries prequel to ‘Chinatown’, which he co-wrote with the late screenwriter Robert Towne. He attributes his attraction to new projects to a mix of personal interest and professional opportunity.

Fincher has spoken about the importance of finding unique combinations of factors that resonate with him in each project, influenced by his love for various films like ‘The Social Network’, ‘Zodiac’, ‘Fight Club’, and ‘Benjamin Button’.
