The start of 2025 marked a promising turn for the US box office, with an estimated $42.9 million earned across all films, surpassing last year’s $40.2 million result and marking the best performance since pre-Covid times.
On January 1, Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King led the box office with a significant gain of 33% compared to the first day of 2024, solidifying its position as the top-performing film on that day. Despite facing competition from Paramount/Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which won the previous weekend, Mufasa secured the number one spot for the sixth consecutive day.
Other notable performers include Focus Features’ Nosferatu and Searchlight’s A Complete Unknown. Nosferatu, starring Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgard, and Aaron-Taylor Johnson, has broken its way into Focus Features’ top movies of all time with a domestic gross exceeding $53 million.
A Complete Unknown, directed by James Mangold and starring Timothée Chalamet, is expected to surpass the entire domestic take of Searchlight Oscar winners The Favourite, Poor Things, and Jojo Rabbit. With its current total reaching $31.7 million, it’s clear that A Complete Unknown has made significant momentum at the box office.
The 2024 box office ended with a record-breaking $8.72 billion, and analysts expect this year to bring in even more revenue, with estimates suggesting the domestic box office will clear $9 billion. This New Year’s Day marks one of three weekends without wide releases in 2025, setting the stage for a successful year ahead.
