Lion King Sequel Exceeds Expectations

Mufasa: The Lion King, the highly anticipated sequel to Disney’s classic 1994 film, has exceeded expectations at the box office. Despite a slow start with only $35 million at the domestic opening weekend, the movie has since regained momentum during the Christmas holiday season.

The film has now grossed $120 million domestically and $214 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $335 million. This impressive haul places Mufasa: The Lion King just outside the top 20 highest-grossing films of 2024 globally.

While it didn’t capture the top spot from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 during its second weekend in theaters, Mufasa: The Lion King still managed to earn $36.8 million, leaving it just under $1 million short of Sonic 3’s total for the same period.

Mufasa: The Lion King is also on track to become one of the top 25 highest-grossing musicals at the domestic box office, currently sitting at #23. Additionally, it has solidified its place as one of the top 20 highest-grossing films of 2024 domestically, just behind Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

For now, Mufasa: The Lion King remains in theaters and is not available for streaming or purchase on digital platforms like Prime Video or Apple TV+. However, it will soon join Disney+ as part of the platform’s growing lineup of new releases.
