A small plane crashed through the roof of a furniture manufacturing building in Fullerton, California, killing two people and injuring 19 others on Thursday. The victims who died were believed to be on board the plane, while those injured were inside the building.
Eleven people were taken to hospitals, with eight being treated and released at the scene. The injuries ranged from minor to very serious. The pilot asked for an immediate return to the airport about 900 feet above ground level but did not explain why he needed to return.
The plane crashed just over a minute after taking off from the Fullerton Municipal Airport in Orange County, approximately 6 miles from Disneyland. The aircraft, a single-engine four-seat Van’s RV-10, was built in 2011 and is a popular “kit-built airplane.”
Security camera footage shows the plane was tilted on its side before crashing into the building, causing a fire and smoke. Firefighters battled the blaze and evacuated surrounding businesses.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the accident. The city of Fullerton has issued a statement expressing support for those affected and vowing to work with agencies to uncover the details of the incident.
