Norway Leads Electric Vehicle Adoption Efforts Globally

Norway has set a new standard in electric vehicle adoption, with 88.9% of new car sales in 2024 powered by electricity. The country is on track to achieve its goal of only adding EVs to the road by 2025. Norway’s success can be attributed to its unique policy approach, which includes high taxes on petrol and diesel cars while exempting EVs from import and value-added taxes.

This consistent approach has paid off, with governments of various political persuasions maintaining the policy over time. The absence of a car lobby also contributed to Norway’s success. “Tax incentives or exemptions are often pulled back in other countries,” according to Christian Bu, head of the Norwegian EV association.

Norway’s adaptability and lack of an automaker lobby have allowed its EV adoption policies to flourish. Even the gas station industry is adapting, with Circle K planning to expand its charger network within the next three years to match its fuel pump count. As Norway continues to lead the way in EV adoption, it’s essential for other countries to take note and follow suit.
