The New York Jets are set to conduct two high-profile interviews as they search for their new head coach. Former Jets coach Rex Ryan, who led the team to back-to-back AFC Championship Game appearances in 2009-2010, is expected to be one of the top candidates alongside Ron Rivera.
Ryan, currently an ESPN analyst, expressed confidence that he will interview for the coaching vacancy, despite having no prior discussions with the team. The Jets’ latest loss, a 40-14 drubbing at Buffalo, was marred by excessive penalties, and Ryan’s experience may be seen as a factor in his potential return to the team.
The Jets have also been interviewing candidates for their general manager position, including former Atlanta Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff and ESPN analyst Louis Riddick. The 33rd Team is leading the search effort, which was previously handled by Mike Tannenbaum and Rick Spielman.
Rivera, who has a long history of coaching experience with Washington Commanders and Carolina Panthers, will be interviewed on Thursday alongside Ryan. With the team’s current season coming to an end, the coaching process is expected to begin soon.
