The Connecticut Better Business Bureau (BBB) has issued a warning to online shoppers about the increasing use of high-tech AI technology by cybercriminals to scam people making online purchases.
According to the BBB, AI-generated scammers can now create ads that are nearly indistinguishable from real websites, complete with realistic fonts, logos, and even copied images. These scammers often target popular products such as electronics, beauty products, and puppies, which are known to be attractive to internet users.
A resident of Bridgeport, Enrique, fell victim to a puppy scam after responding to an online ad that seemed legitimate. The scammer demanded $1,800 plus an additional $1,000 he had already sent, totaling $3,000. Enrique lost his money and his dog, as the scammer refused to return it.
Experts recommend taking precautions when shopping online, including researching products thoroughly, paying with credit cards instead of cash apps, and verifying contact information and physical addresses. The BBB advises checking for legitimate contact methods and a working address, as these are key red flags that may indicate a scam.
By being aware of these tactics and taking steps to protect yourself, you can reduce the risk of falling victim to AI-generated online scams.
