Meta has deleted Facebook and Instagram profiles of its AI-powered characters created over a year ago after users discovered them and engaged in conversations, which went viral. The company initially introduced these profiles in September 2023 but shut down most by summer 2024.
The AI profiles included Liv, a “proud Black queer momma,” and Carter, who described himself as a relationship coach. When users questioned the creator’s team demographics, the bots responded with discrepancies. Meta later removed the profiles to fix a bug that prevented users from blocking them, stating they were part of an early experiment.
In contrast, Meta allows users to generate their own AI chatbots using prompts and guidelines. However, concerns arise about moderation and liability for what these artificial companions say. While courts have yet to address this issue, cases like the one filed against Character.ai highlight the need for clearer regulations.
