Winter Respiratory Virus Season Spreads Across US

As the holiday season has ended, a new threat is emerging: winter respiratory virus season. Dr. Thomas Russo, professor and chief of infectious disease at the University at Buffalo, warns that individuals over 50, those with underlying diseases, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals are at higher risk.

The surge in illnesses is attributed to the cold weather, which is bringing RSV, influenza, and COVID-19 back into circulation. “We really haven’t had a whole lot out there,” says Dr. Russo. As a result, experts advise caution this time of year. To minimize the risk, Dr. Russo recommends three key actions:

First, get vaccinated against flu and COVID-19, even if you’ve been fully vaccinated before. While not perfect, vaccines can reduce the likelihood of severe disease.

Second, isolate yourself if you’re sick to prevent spreading the illness to others.

Lastly, test immediately for COVID-19 as soon as symptoms appear. This is crucial in preventing the spread of the virus.

Dr. Russo emphasizes that even though progress has been made against COVID, it’s still a significant public health concern. By taking these precautions and staying informed, individuals can reduce their risk of infection and protect those around them.
