January Stargazing Guide 2025: Peak Meteor Shower & Lunar Events

Get ready for a spectacular celestial showcase in January 2025! The first month of the year offers a series of breathtaking events for stargazers.

The Quadrantid meteor shower will peak on January 2nd and 3rd, offering a dazzling display of meteors if skies are clear. This annual event is considered one of the best of the year due to the lack of moonlight, with dozens of meteors visible every hour during its peak.

In mid-January, the first full Moon of the year will rise on January 13th, accompanied by a planetary parade featuring Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. The Red Planet, Mars, will make its closest approach to Earth at approximately 58 million miles away, visible nearly the entire night. NASA notes that Mars appears reddish due to the oxidization of iron in its rocks.

The planets will be visible without advanced equipment from after sunset to just before midnight. Neptune and Uranus will also be visible, but only with specialized telescopes or similar devices.
