India’s IGI Airport Impacted by Severe Fog

Severe fog has hit Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport in the national capital, causing nearly 500 flights to be delayed or cancelled. As of Saturday evening, 412 flights were delayed for over 45 minutes, while another 45 flights were cancelled due to bad weather conditions at destination airports.

The dense fog also led to flight diversions to alternate airports, with 19 flights re-routing to other locations. The low-visibility conditions persisted throughout the day, affecting flight operations.

According to data from FlightRadar24, New Delhi’s IGI airport experienced zero visibility between January 3 and 4, rendering runway landings and arrivals impossible for extended periods. Even during daytime hours, landing attempts were thwarted due to foggy conditions that reduced visibility to below 50 meters.

The impact of the dense fog on air travel was exacerbated by weather forecasts predicting continued poor weather in northern India. Airlines acknowledged the issue, stating that low-visibility conditions would continue to affect flight operations.

With thousands of flights affected and severe weather expected to persist, travelers are advised to monitor flight updates and plan accordingly.
