Minnesota defeated Virginia Tech 24-10 in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, extending its bowl winning streak to eight games. The Golden Gophers, led by coach P.J. Fleck, outgained the Hokies 403-223 and dominated the game after a slow start.
Max Brosmer threw for 211 yards and a touchdown, while Darius Taylor ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Elijah Spencer had six catches for 81 yards and two touchdowns, earning him the game’s MVP award. The victory marked Fleck’s sixth consecutive bowl win at Minnesota.
Fleck said he was happy to celebrate with his team after their eighth straight bowl victory, which he called “a little ironic” given that it marked the end of his career as head coach. For Virginia Tech, the loss marked its fifth straight defeat in bowl games, and head coach Brent Pry acknowledged that the team had struggled due to a high number of new starters.
Despite the Hokies’ efforts, Minnesota took control of the game after Spencer’s two touchdown catches in the second quarter, and the Golden Gophers held on for the win. The Duke’s Mayo Bowl tradition, which includes a post-game mayo bath for the winning coach, was a fitting end to Fleck’s career as head coach.
