Apple Agrees to $95 Million Settlement Over Siri Data Gathering

Apple has agreed to pay $95 million to settle a lawsuit alleging that the company’s Siri personal assistant was secretly sharing user data with third-party advertisers without their consent. The lawsuit claims that Apple shared information from voice queries to Siri with advertisers, resulting in ads appearing immediately after users made inquiries.

The settlement comes as no surprise, given Apple’s substantial profits. In 2022, the company reported a net income of $95 billion and a profit of $27 billion. This fee is estimated to be a negligible amount compared to the firm’s overall revenue.

The lawsuit also raises concerns about user privacy and security. The sharing of queries with advertisers could potentially compromise user data and create an increased risk of threat actors exploiting this vulnerability.

This settlement may pave the way for additional legal action against other tech vendors that provide personal assistants, including Microsoft, Google, and Amazon.
