Giants Retain GM and Coach Amid 3-14 Season

The New York Giants have retained general manager Joe Schoen and coach Brian Daboll after a dismal 3-14 season. Team president John Mara announced the decision in a statement, citing the duo’s vision for the team despite disappointing results.

Schoen and Daboll were under pressure to perform after the team’s franchise-record 10-game losing streak and 11 losses in the last 12 games. However, Mara expressed confidence in their process and vision, saying they implemented a new approach that he believes will lead to better results moving forward.

The coach admitted that the season was “terrible” but reiterated his commitment to Daboll’s leadership. He stated that he never wavered in his belief that he would remain coach and showed no regret about handling quarterback issues during his tenure.

Mara emphasized finding a new quarterback as the top priority for next season, stating that the team went into 2024 willing to solidify Daniel Jones’ future but ultimately decided it wasn’t working out. The Giants will have the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NFL draft to address this issue.

The team’s roster was also a major contributor to the poor performance, with Mara questioning whether the current roster is significantly better than when Schoen and Daboll took over three years ago. However, he praised their personnel decisions, including an “outstanding” draft and signings of good free agents.

Mara acknowledged that there were questions about Schoen’s and Daboll’s futures but decided to give them another chance due to past success, albeit limited. He emphasized the importance of building a team “the right way” and avoiding the cycle of impulsive decisions that led to previous coaching changes.

The decision to retain Schoen and Daboll is likely to be unpopular among fans, but Mara believes it’s the right move for the franchise going forward.
