Android Devices to Adopt MagSafe-Based Qi2 Charging Standard in 2025

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has announced that more Android devices will use the MagSafe-based Qi2 charging standard in 2025, as part of a broader update to the Qi v2.1 specification. While not all devices will require magnets, some phones may need cases with embedded magnets for magnetic alignment, earning them the “Qi2 Ready” certification.

This news explains recent rumors about Samsung’s Galaxy S25 phones, which reportedly require a case with a magnetic ring for MagSafe-style wireless charging. Google has also expressed its commitment to the Qi2 standard and is contributing high-power wireless charging technology to the WPC. Currently, only Apple devices like the HMD Skyline come equipped with magnets for wirelessly charging.

The WPC’s update also introduces in-car wireless charging using a moving coil that adapts to align with the phone’s coil, courtesy of Panasonic Automotive Systems. The Qi v2.1 update includes both moving coils and “Qi2 Ready” certification as key features.
