Patriots owner Robert Kraft expressed his commitment to finding a new head coach after releasing Jerod Mayo’s contract. Kraft said he feels terrible for Mayo and believes the decision is on him, given his inability to provide enough time for the head coach to succeed.
Kraft announced that the team has submitted a request to speak with Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, along with former Tennessee head coach Mike Vrabel. He stated that he wants to interview multiple candidates before making a final decision, with the help of senior personnel executive Alonzo Highsmith and executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf.
The team’s poor performance this season, 4-13 under Mayo, was cited as a factor in his decision. Kraft acknowledged negative fan reaction, including chants to fire Mayo at home games, which influenced his choice.
Despite the difficult decision, Kraft praised Mayo for being a “gentleman” and accepting the outcome. He emphasized that he prioritizes the team’s success over personal considerations, noting that he is “a fan of this team first.”
Kraft also stated that Highsmith and Wolf will remain with the team, as part of his effort to find people working together to achieve their goals. The new coach is expected to have significant input on roster decisions and internal dynamics.
The search for a new head coach continues, with Kraft committed to finding someone who can help the Patriots return to playoff contention and ultimately win championships.
