Ukraine Launches New Offensive in Russia’s Kursk Region

Ukraine has launched a new offensive in Russia’s western Kursk border region, with reports indicating substantial forces are involved. A top adviser to the Ukrainian president said “good news” from the front, while Russian military bloggers confirmed multiple attacks on villages and border towns.

According to reports, Ukraine first seized a foothold inside the Kursk region in August but was since pushed back by Russia. However, with this new offensive, Kyiv’s forces appear to be going on the attack again. Videos posted online show columns of Ukrainian armored vehicles moving into position.

Russian military bloggers said the situation is challenging for the Russian defenders, and that two assaults have been repelled so far. Despite some small advances, Ukrainian troops did not achieve significant breakthroughs. The new assault comes just before President-elect Donald Trump’s expected return to office, where a peace deal may be pushed for to end the nearly 3-year-old war.
