Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick expressed his views on Jerod Mayo’s firing during Monday’s The Pat McAfee Show, sticking to form with a typical “on-brand” response.
Mayo was removed as the team’s head coach after just one season, with many questioning the decision. Belichick deflected comments about the move, instead pointing fingers at the Patriots’ ownership and management structure.
“They’re the ones who are really making the calls,” Belichick stated. “I don’t know from the outside looking in. They haven’t called me and asked.”
Robert Kraft introduced Mayo as Belichick’s replacement after announcing his departure. Despite having a rookie quarterback, the team struggled with dysfunction both on and off the field, finishing 4-13.
The Patriots are now searching for Mayo’s successor, with Mike Vrabel and Ben Johnson reportedly in the running. Meanwhile, Belichick is moving on to his new role as head coach of the University of North Carolina football program.
