Father of Georgia School Shooting Suspect Arrested

The father of Colt Gray, a 14-year-old suspect in the Apalachee High School shooting, was arrested and charged with various counts including involuntary manslaughter, second-degree murder, and cruelty to children. The charges stem from knowingly allowing his son to possess a weapon.

According to officials, Georgia law prohibits minors from possessing handguns, but there is no minimum age to possess rifles or shotguns in the state. The suspect allegedly used an AR-style weapon in the shooting that killed four people and injured nine others.

The investigation revealed that police and federal agents are looking into whether the gun was purchased by the teen’s father as a gift for his son in December 2023. In May, the suspect and his father were interviewed by the Jackson County Sheriff’s office after the FBI received tips about online posts threatening a school shooting. At the time, investigators didn’t have enough evidence for an arrest.

The alleged shooter is being “handled” as an adult and had his first court appearance Friday morning. His father faces up to 180 years in prison if convicted on all counts.
