British lawmakers are seeking answers from Chinese e-commerce giant Shein about its use of cotton sourced from China, but the company is remaining tight-lipped on the issue.
Shein has been asked by lawmakers to provide more information on its supply chain, particularly with regards to cotton production in China. However, the company’s lawyer has repeatedly dodged questions from parliamentarians, sparking concerns that the firm may be hiding something.
The UK’s Committee of Public Accounts described the responses as “bordering on contempt”, further fuelling speculation about Shein’s ties to Chinese suppliers. The committee’s chair expressed frustration at the lack of transparency, stating that lawmakers need more information to hold companies accountable for their actions.
As a result, concerns are growing about the potential risks facing consumers who purchase from Shein. With many brands sourcing materials from China, there is an increasing awareness of the environmental and social implications associated with such practices.
