AMD has released its new Ryzen AI Max chip for laptops, boasting significant performance gains compared to previous generations. However, in a recent comparison with Apple’s M4 line, the company omitted the M4 Max variant, which is Apple’s top-of-the-line chip.
AMD compared its 16-core Ryzen AI Max chip to Apple’s standard M4 and M4 Pro chips, highlighting its graphical performance and AI capabilities. The chip is marketed as a top-tier option for content creators and gamers who require raw power.
In the comparison, AMD claimed an 86% advantage in a v-ray workload against the 14-core M4 Pro chip. However, this assessment doesn’t account for Apple’s flagship M4 Max chip, which features a 16-core CPU and up to 40 GPU cores.
By leaving out the M4 Max from the benchmarks, AMD likely avoided showing its own chip’s limitations against the more powerful competitor. The real-world performance difference remains to be seen, as Apple is expected to release its M4 Ultra chip later this year, which would further improve performance and efficiency.
AMD’s Ryzen AI Max chip does demonstrate significant improvements over previous generations, but the comparison with the M4 line raises questions about fairness. Nevertheless, it is essential to consider that the company’s 2nm chips are also on the way, which will likely enhance the performance and efficiency of the Ryzen AI Max chip.
