Iran has executed a record number of women, at least 31 since the start of 2024, according to human rights NGO Iran Human Rights. The Norwegian organization condemned the Iranian judicial system, calling it “brutal and inhuman.” Since 2010, IHR documented 241 executions of women, mostly for murder or drug-related crimes.
The NGO argues that many convicted women were victims of domestic violence or sexual abuse before committing a crime. However, Iran’s law of retaliation requires “paying” with another life in murder cases, except when the victim’s family forgives or receives financial compensation. IHR says this system rarely considers family violence as mitigating circumstances.
