Disney has announced a plan to merge Hulu Live + TV and FuboTV, creating a new virtual multichannel video programming distributor (MVPD) company that will operate under the Fubo name. Disney will own 70% of the combined company, with Fubo’s CEO David Gandler leading the management team.
The deal aims to enhance consumer choice and pricing, offering a variety of programming packages at attractive prices. The new company will offer a Sports & Broadcast service featuring ABC, ESPN, and other networks via a carriage agreement. Consumers will still have the option to subscribe to both Fubo and Hulu + Live TV as separate services.
Fubo has been available since 2015 and boasts over 6.2 million North American subscribers combined with Hulu + Live TV. The deal is expected to be well-capitalized and cash-flow positive immediately after closing, pending regulatory approvals and shareholder approval.
