Blizzard Alert: DC Region at Risk of Record-Breaking Snowfall This Weekend

A powerful winter storm could bring record-breaking snowfall to the Washington D.C. area this weekend, with some areas potentially seeing over a foot of snow.

The latest forecast from weather models suggests that a cold front moving southward could collide with a low-pressure system in the northern jetstream, creating a powerful nor’easter that turns northward up the coastline. This would bring heavy snowfall and strong winds to the region, posing a significant threat to travelers and commuters.

While there is currently no blizzard watch or warning issued for D.C., the potential for record-breaking snowfall is high. The city has not seen a blizzard since January 2016, and this storm could potentially rival the February 2010 event that saw over 28 inches of snow in just two days.

The American Weather Model (GFS) is predicting heavy snowfall for the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions on Friday and Saturday, while the European model shows a weaker system with less significant snowfall. However, it’s too early to say which forecast is correct, as small shifts in upper air energy could drastically change the storm’s track.

The FOX 5 Weather Team will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more data becomes available.
