Dr. Will Kang, an orthopedic surgeon in Baltimore, has revealed the five everyday products he avoids due to their link to cancer risks. His wife, an oncologist, shares similar concerns and ensures they steer clear of certain items when shopping.
Non-stick pans and plastic utensils are at the top of Dr. Kang’s list. These contain PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals,” which can disrupt hormones and lead to breast and prostate cancer. Black plastic is particularly concerning, as it often contains higher levels of toxic chemicals like flame retardants that can leach into food during cooking.
Dr. Kang has also eliminated processed meats like hot dogs and cold cuts from his diet. Emerging research links these products to increased colon cancer risk in young people. Additionally, he avoids candies like Skittles due to their high levels of dyes, including Red 40, which have been linked to hormone imbalances and some cancers.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies processed meat as a group 1 carcinogen, meaning there is clear evidence that it can cause cancer in humans. Dr. Kang’s switch to a more natural diet has been beneficial, and he attributes his reduced risk of colon cancer to this change.
To minimize exposure to potential carcinogens, Dr. Kang recommends using only stainless steel and cast iron pots and pans, as well as wooden utensils instead of plastic ones. By making these simple changes, individuals can reduce their risk of developing certain types of cancer.
