Indonesia Joins BRICS Bloc as Emerging Market Power

Indonesia has welcomed its formal membership to BRICS, a bloc of developing economies seen as a counterweight to the West. The Brazilian foreign ministry announced Indonesia’s inclusion on Monday, stating that it shares the will to reform global governance and cooperate with other member countries.

The move is seen as a strategic step for Indonesia to improve collaborations with other developing nations based on equality, mutual respect, and sustainable development. The country expresses gratitude to Russia, the 2024 BRICS chair, and Brazil for their support in facilitating its membership.

BRICS was created in 2009 by founding members Brazil, Russia, India, and China. The bloc has since expanded to include South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. Indonesia’s inclusion brings the total number of member countries to ten.

The group aims to boost cooperation between member countries, particularly in trade and financial matters. This year’s BRICS summit is scheduled for July in Rio de Janeiro, with a focus on developing non-dollar transactions and strengthening local currencies.

Indonesia’s membership marks its increasingly active role in global issues and commitment to multilateral cooperation. The country sees this as an opportunity to strengthen its relationships with other emerging markets and contribute to a more inclusive and fair global structure.
