ByteDance’s Lemon8 has gained traction in the US amid a looming ban on TikTok. As creators push the app, its popularity is expected to increase further depending on the outcome of a US Supreme Court hearing. The app, owned by China-based ByteDance, resembles TikTok with a short-form video format and Instagram-like aesthetics.
Launched in 2023, Lemon8 has seen significant growth, including a 150% increase in global downloads in December compared to last year. In the US, it now ranks among top-free apps on Apple’s app store. However, its popularity is uncertain due to the law that could ban TikTok if ByteDance is not sold.
Creators have been recommending Lemon8 as an alternative to TikTok, citing its features and user base. The app allows cross-posting of content between TikTok and Lemon8 accounts, enhancing creators’ reach and engagement potential. Despite this, the impact of the law on other ByteDance apps, including CapCut and Hypic, is unclear.
Data indicates that Lemon8 has around 1 million daily active users in the US and 12.5 million global monthly active users as of December 24. The app’s popularity could be boosted if the Supreme Court rules in favor of TikTok, allowing ByteDance to maintain control over its operations.
