Nvidia has unveiled its next-generation GeForce RTX 50-series graphics cards, featuring four new models: the RTX 5090, 5080, 5070, and 5070 Ti. The flagship RTX 5090 boasts a price tag of $2,000 and claims to be twice as powerful as the RTX 4090 but requires a significantly higher power supply.
The RTX 5090’s smaller size and increased performance are shared by all four cards in the lineup. Nvidia claims the $1,000 RTX 5080 is twice as fast as the RTX 4080, while the budget-friendly $550 RTX 5070 offers comparable performance to the RTX 4090 at nearly a third of the price.
These new GPUs rely on Nvidia’s machine learning technology, including RTX Neural Shaders and DLSS 4 upscaling. The latter allows for upscaling lower-resolution gameplay to 1440p or 4K resolutions while also generating additional frames for smoother performance.
While AI-powered technologies can offer impressive performance gains, they also come with trade-offs in terms of quality and consistency. Nvidia acknowledges these challenges but believes its technology has the potential to match hardware rendering in terms of quantity. The mid-range RTX 50 GPUs are expected to offer a more affordable option for achieving 4K resolution gameplay and high FPS.
Preorders for the GeForce RTX 5090, 5080, 5070 Ti, and 5070 models will be available soon. The RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 launch on January 30, while the 5070 and 5070 Ti arrive in February. Third-party GPUs are expected to follow shortly after Nvidia’s models launch, along with laptop GPUs scheduled for March.
