Sugary Drinks Linked to 330,000 Annual Deaths, Experts Warn

A new study published in Nature Medicine has found a strong link between sugary drinks and increased mortality rates. The research analyzed global data on sugar-sweetened beverages consumed around the world and estimated that these drinks cause over 330,000 annual deaths from diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The study highlights the problem of sugary drinks, particularly in Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa, where they are a major contributor to cardiovascular disease cases and type 2 diabetes. Experts warn that the impact is not limited to these regions but affects younger male adults with higher education in urban areas.

Researchers emphasize that while sugary beverages have “empty calories” and can lead to fast-acting carbohydrates, which raise blood sugar quickly, alternative sweeteners may not be a solution. In fact, both natural and artificial low-calorie sweeteners are being reevaluated for their potential health harms.

Instead of relying on sweetened drinks or artificial alternatives, experts recommend switching to unsweetened beverages like seltzer, tea, coffee, or plain water. Hydration is essential for managing blood pressure, blood sugar, internal temperature, and digestion. Water is considered the best hydrating beverage, but infused water with fruits or herbs can be a flavorful alternative.

The study’s findings underscore the need for urgent action to address this public health crisis. Experts stress that it’s time to pay attention to the impact of sugary drinks on our health and take priority actions to prevent suffering from these preventable causes.
