Two people were found dead in the landing gear compartment of a JetBlue plane that landed at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The bodies were discovered during a routine inspection after the plane touched down on Monday night.
According to authorities, the victims are both male and their identities remain unknown. The plane, an Airbus A320, had departed from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and made several stops before landing in Fort Lauderdale.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the deceased were stowaways who may have been hidden in a wheel well during the flight. Authorities are working to determine how they gained access to the aircraft.
“We’re committed to working closely with authorities to understand how this occurred,” said JetBlue in a statement. “The circumstances surrounding the stowaway remain under investigation.”
The incident is being treated as a security breach, and detectives from the Broward Sheriff’s Office are investigating the matter further. Autopsies will be performed to determine the cause of death.
This incident has sparked concerns about the safety of air travel, particularly during peak holiday seasons when some passengers may attempt to stow away on flights. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has strict regulations in place to prevent unauthorized access to aircraft, but incidents like this highlight the need for continued vigilance and enforcement.
