Mexico President Tells Trump’s ‘Mexican America’ Suggestion is ‘Nice’

Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum has responded to US President-elect Donald Trump’s suggestion to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” by jokingly referring to a historical map that shows North America as “Mexican America”.

The 1607 map, which was shown during a daily press conference, highlights an early portrayal of North America. According to Jose Alfonso Suarez del Real, the former culture minister, Mexican America is recognized since the 17th century and refers to the northern part of the American continent. This term has been internationally used as a maritime navigational reference for hundreds of years.

Sheinbaum also addressed Trump’s claim that Mexico is “run by cartels”, saying “In Mexico, the people are in charge”. The president emphasized her country’s commitment to addressing security issues and expressed hope for a positive relationship with the US. Despite their public disagreements, Sheinbaum remains optimistic about the future of bilateral relations between the two nations.
