Sony has debuted a groundbreaking concept at CES 2025, allowing gamers to fully immerse themselves in PlayStation game worlds. The Future Immersive Entertainment Concept, showcased in footage, features a giant cube-like structure made of high-definition screens that surround the player with the game world.
The experience is enhanced by “engaging audio,” “scent and atmospherics” with interactive content, and even imitation weapons. Players can shoot at screens as enemies appear, simulating the sensation of smell and atmosphere through scent-emitting technology.
Although the demo was based on The Last of Us gameplay, it’s unclear when or if this technology will be available to the public due to its immense cost and technical limitations. However, Sony plans to showcase similar concepts with other franchises in the future, potentially including God of War and Horizon.
This innovative technology is still years away from widespread adoption, as the game world favorite The Last of Us has been relatively quiet since 2020’s Part 2 release. With its recent scrapping of a multiplayer take and focus on a new sci-fi franchise, it’s uncertain when another entry will arrive.
