Human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a common respiratory virus, has surged in China, with cases also reported in India and the UK. The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concerns about its potential spread five years after the Covid-19 pandemic.
Here’s what you need to know:
HMPV is a viral disease that causes flu-like symptoms. It peaks during late winter and spring, infecting almost every child by age five. The virus transmits through droplets from an infected person’s cough or sneezes, as well as contaminated surfaces.
Symptoms of HMPV infection appear within three to six days after infection, including cough, fever, nasal congestion, and wheezing. Vulnerable groups may experience more severe symptoms.
The virus is contagious but not typically deadly in healthy individuals. Most people have mild symptoms resembling the common cold or flu and recover within seven to 10 days. However, HMPV can lead to severe respiratory complications, such as bronchitis and pneumonia, in high-risk groups like infants, older adults, and immunocompromised individuals.
Treatment focuses on managing symptoms with fever medications, hydration, and rest. Severe cases may require hospitalization and supportive care like oxygen therapy.
Global surveillance data is scarce due to limited reporting and testing methods. WHO has advised countries to boost surveillance for respiratory illnesses and maintain standard precautions, such as hand-washing and social distancing.
