A judge in Wales has dismissed a decade-long lawsuit by James Howells, who lost his Bitcoin hard drive worth nearly $750 million in a landfill in 2013. Howells had offered to fund the excavation process and share 25% of the recovered Bitcoin with the city council, but they denied his request.
The Circuit Commercial Judge for Wales ruled that there was “no reasonable grounds” for bringing the claim and “no realistic prospect” of success if the case proceeded to a full trial. The judge accepted the council’s argument that it owned the hard drive and Howells had no entitlement to it.
Howells expressed disappointment and frustration with the ruling, stating that he felt it was a “kick in the teeth.” He claimed that he had been trying to engage with the city council for 12 years but was met with resistance. The decision has left him feeling vindictated by the justice system.
