Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson is facing an uncertain return to play after suffering a second Achilles tendon rupture in his right ankle. The injury occurred while he was rolling his ankle in Miami earlier this week, prompting the team’s release of a statement confirming Dr. Bob Anderson performed the subsequent surgeries.
The first surgery took place on October 25, followed by another procedure that occurred just before publication. Watson initially complained of discomfort after the initial incident and underwent an MRI which revealed the re-rupture of his Achilles tendon.
Watson’s recovery time and potential return to play status are currently unclear, with many speculating he will miss significant time during the upcoming 2025 season. The quarterback has started only 19 games since joining the Browns, following a trade that included three first-round picks and a fully guaranteed $230 million contract before the 2022 season.
As a result of his injury, Watson faces substantial financial obligations to the team, including a $46 million payment in each of the next two seasons. His cap hits for 2025 and 2026 are estimated at $72.9 million each.
