A recent leak of iQue emails has shed light on a previously unknown project codenamed “Clipper” for Nintendo’s Switch console. The project, which began in 2015, aimed to bring back the Virtual Console feature for the Switch, but it was ultimately scrapped in favor of Nintendo Switch Online.
The plan included features such as CRT TV mode with animations and sound effects for NES and SNES games, online multiplayer with a countdown timer, and emojis for communication between players. The project also involved extensive testing on each emulator, which led to its eventual cancellation due to high costs.
Nintendo had planned to use the Virtual Console as a solution to address player concerns about game availability on launch and the need to purchase games multiple times. The “Clipper” project was eventually replaced by Nintendo Switch Online, which offers online play, save data backup, platinum points, and a subscription-based service for $20 a year.
Although many fans still miss the Virtual Console, they acknowledge that Nintendo Switch Online provides a viable alternative. However, some argue that owning individual games without relying on the online service would be preferable. The revelation of the scrapped “Clipper” project highlights Nintendo’s priorities and their approach to game distribution and accessibility.
