Elderberry Juice May Help with Weight and Metabolic Health

Researchers at Washington State University have found that consuming elderberry juice daily can lead to positive changes in gut microbiome, improved blood glucose levels, and increased fat oxidation. The study, published in the journal Nutrients, tested 18 overweight adults who drank either 12 ounces of elderberry juice or a placebo for seven days. Results showed a 24% reduction in blood glucose levels and a 9% decrease in insulin levels among those who consumed the elderberry juice.

Elderberries are rich in anthocyanins, plant-based compounds with anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, and antimicrobial effects. The high concentration of these compounds in elderberries may explain their potential health benefits. While other berries contain similar compounds, elderberries have a particularly high dose, requiring significantly more consumption to achieve the same effect.

The findings of this study suggest that elderberry juice could be a “potent tool” for weight management and improving metabolic health. As one researcher noted, “Food is medicine, and science is catching up to that popular wisdom.”
